What Simon Delivers:
Integrity and huge practical experience are key features of Simon Mason's approach. Without question one of the most experienced professional driver coaches in our sport, Simon is perfectly placed for introducing and training anyone for motorsport, from absolute novices to club racers who have realised there is more to being fast and safe than they first thought.
Despite the very high prestigious car manufacturers Simon works with he is not a car snob and keen to work with anyone who wants to learn. A customers passion and keeness to improve is all that matters.
Motorsport is a dynamic activity, from the cars, the tyres, the people, the weather and so on, every element is changing. These dynamic elements really have no interest in how fast or safe we want to be, how tired we are feeling, or that we can't actualy afford to damage the car we chose to drive. After all, EVERYTHING we do on track is limited first by physics and second by the people around us before we even arrived at the track, let alone the other new multiple variables around us when we are on track! In short it is very easy to act in very simplistic way and take key elements for granted. Simon's primary strength has always been spotting the bigger dynamic picture and applying focus for clients to make the best out of a given package, whether on track or off.
Who is Simon Mason:
Simon grew up around motorsport in the 1970's, living within earshot of Silverstone circuit in the 1980's, it was perhaps inevitable he would work in motorsport. Growing up in an environment of "there's a spanner and a Haynes manual, work it out for yourself" lead Simon to build his first race car aged only 18, a car purchased for just £180 with a broken engine.
With a basic income working as a race instructor at The Jim Russell Racing Drivers School (Donington Park), Ian Taylor Motor Racing School (Thruxton) and The Silverstone Race School and no formal qualifications for a "conventional career", funding to go racing has always been limited but Simon made it happen when he could, winning his first Championship with 2 races to go in 1992. Thanks to some amazing friends, clients and the trust of some major car manufacturers, Simon has been able to race in many different car types and locations generating the experience to help take some of those clients to Championship titles.
Simon's career as a driver coach really took off in the late 90's when he became one of the very first full time racing driver coaches. Back in the days before data loggers and in particular Video Vboxes (in which Simon was one of the first to own and use one with customers) most racing instructors back then were uncomfortable to coach in racing cars, in particular in Caterhams. Now instructors can get to drive more by laying down video data for clients, they put up with it! This meant that Simon and a very small group of very experienced motorsport driver coaches who were training the bulk of the UK's amateur racing drivers for many years. It was almost impossible to attend a track day in the 00's without crossing paths with Simon at some stage in any given month.
These days Simon is available for coaching alongside his growing Simulator business, Sim Dynamics Limited and his contracts with Aston Martin, Porsche and Ferrari.
